How to Build Backlinks for New Websites

Launching an online venture is exhilarating unless no one comes to see your site.

Publish your work then click post & await response. But nothing happens.

That’s where backlinks come in.

You cannot only get link building done with your website without doing any other work too. Your company needs intelligent and deliberate tactics which really do have an impact – especially if you don’t already possess any website credibility at all.

Please let me guide you as if explaining everything like how one would do with their new acquaintance, for whom we are trying our best.

Why Backlinks Matter (Especially for New Sites)

Consider links to be a vote for you.

Other sites linking back is like getting votes from google and bing. More high-quality vote counts mean that people start perceiving it as a reliable website.

But here’s the catch…

New websites don’t have authority yet. So you can’t just sit back and expect people to link to you naturally. You have to go out and earn those links.

And yes—it’s possible, even from day one.

Start With Content Worth Linking To

Prior to considering any form of engagement and strategy questions first answer this basic query:

Would I link to this if I found it on Google?

If the answer is “meh,” then no backlink strategy will save you.

Focus on creating content that:

  • Solves a real problem
  • Shares unique insights or experiences
  • Is better than what’s already ranking

For example, instead of writing a basic article like SEO Tips, go deeper:

  • Add real examples
  • Share personal results
  • Include step-by-step processes

When your content actually helps people, backlinks become much easier to get.

Use Guest Posting the Smart Way

Guest posting still works—but only if you do it right.

Do not bulk email hundred sites sending out mass mailings to them all at once. Instead, focus on:

  • Relevant blogs in your niche
  • Sites that already publish guest content
  • Platforms with real traffic (not just high metrics)

When pitching, keep it simple and human:

  • Mention something specific about their site
  • Suggest 2–3 topic ideas
  • Show that you understand their audience

And here’s the important part…

Write something genuinely useful. Not just for the backlink—but to build your reputation.

One good guest post can do more than 20 low-quality links.

Leverage Your Existing Network

Many overlook that fact however it's a fairly easy win to get.

Ask yourself:

  • Have you got any friends who have websites?
  • Friends running blogs?
  • Clients with online businesses?

Reach out and offer value first:

  • Write a helpful article
  • Improve their existing content
  • Add insights they’re missing

Then naturally include your link where it makes sense.

Although these are tiny links now, it will take less time for search engines to crawl them up as well.

Build Backlinks Through HARO (Help a Reporter Out)

That’s among my favourite tactics to employ on a brand-new website.

Journalists are constantly looking for expert quotes. Platforms like HARO connect you with these opportunities.

Here’s how it works:

  • You get daily queries from reporters
  • You respond with useful insights
  • If selected, you get a backlink from a high-authority site

It’s all about time efficiency, performance standards.

Do not think too much about it. Make it concise, informative & direct.

Even one successful pitch can land you a powerful backlink that would normally be very hard to get.

Use the “Skyscraper Technique” (But Make It Better)

It’s been said to you many times, but unfortunately everyone does a bad job at doing so.

The idea is simple:

  1. Find content in your niche with lots of backlinks
  2. Create something better
  3. Reach out to the people linking to the original

But here’s where people fail…

They create something slightly better.

That’s not enough.

You need to make your version:

  • More detailed
  • Easier to read
  • Updated with fresh insights
  • Visually better (images, examples, formatting)

Then when you reach out, don’t just say:

“Hey, I made something better.”

Instead say:

“I noticed you linked to this guide. I recently created an updated version with [specific improvement]. Thought it might be useful for your readers.”

Keep it natural. No pressure.

Get Listed in Niche Directories (The Right Ones)

Not all directories are bad.

In fact, niche-specific directories can give your new site a solid starting push.

Look for:

  • Industry-related listings
  • Local business directories (if relevant)
  • Curated resource pages

Avoid spammy directories that exist only for links.

A good directory:

  • Has real traffic
  • Is relevant to your niche
  • Looks trustworthy

These links might not be powerful individually, but they help build a natural backlink profile.

Turn Mentions Into Backlinks

Sometimes people mention your brand but don’t link to you.

This is a hidden opportunity.

Use tools (or manual searches) to find:

  • Brand mentions
  • Website name mentions
  • Your personal name

Then politely reach out:

“Hi there – thanks for mentioning me to you… could we have an external backlink to this blog. Would you mind adding a link so readers can easily find it?

Simple. Friendly. Effective.

Collaborate With Other Creators

Don't chase links but establish connections instead.

Connect with:

  • Bloggers in your niche
  • YouTubers
  • Small creators growing alongside you

Ways to collaborate:

  • Co-write articles
  • Do interviews
  • Feature each other in content

When you build genuine connections, backlinks happen naturally.

And honestly, these are often the strongest links you’ll ever get.

Be Consistent (This Is Where Most People Fail)

Here’s the truth no one likes to hear:

Backlinks take time.

You won’t see results overnight. And that’s okay.

Focus on:

  • Publishing consistently
  • Reaching out regularly
  • Improving your content

Even if you build just 3–5 quality backlinks per week, that compounds over time.

Most people quit too early.

The ones who stay consistent? They win.

A Simple Strategy You Can Start Today

Try these first if things are getting too much for you:.

Week 1:

  • Publish two high quality articles.
  • Reach out to 10 websites for guest posts

Week 2:

  • Submit to 3–5 niche directories
  • Respond to HARO queries

Week 3:

  • Try one skyscraper campaign
  • Contact people who mentioned your niche topic

Repeat.

Just take it easy and stay consistent.

Final Thought

Link building is not a hack, and it’s definitely no shortcut to build links.

Its being there, adding value & meeting your target audience.

Sometimes, its gonna be tedious for me. Not all e-mails will be answered. Certain things will not succeed.

It is a step along that way.

However, as long as consistency is maintained and efforts are put towards ensuring high-quality content rather than taking easy routes to success then one should see their ranks improve significantly.

Then it’s all over.
